There are definite steps to take to have a postive outcome.Let them know that you are a victim of identity theft. Keep a record of all communication you make with the identity theft attorney and the credit agencies, including everything you send them, each person you talk to, and the date and time of all communication.

If you have been a victim of identity theft, you should contact the fraud department for each credit bureau. You have the right to demand that the credit bureau make corrections to your credit report.

The information that perpetrators seek includes Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, names, bank account information and credit card information. Over the past decades and with the growth of the Internet, identity theft has become an increasingly visible problem

Even if you have not been a victim of identity theft, consider asking the credit bureaus to place a security alert on your account as a protective measure. This alert instructs creditors to call you personally to verify applicant information when applying for new credit

You can also utilize the Identity Theft Affidavit.  It is available to you if you are involved in a dispute regarding fraudulent debts and accounts opened by an identity thief. Rather than completing several different forms, you can use the Identity Theft Affidavit to alert businesses to the fraudulent accounts opened in your name.

When corresponding with the credit agencies and identity theft attorneys send correspondence by certified mail, return receipt requested. Keep copies of all letters and documents, including receipts for expenditures related to minimizing the damage and repairing your credit.

If there is a police report available, include it in all correspondence with financial institutions, credit issuers, other companies, credit reporting agencies and to any identity theft attorney you are working with.
